AJ pursued his academic interests, earning degrees from the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force.
AJ's love for his family was immeasurable. He is survived by his loving children, Lisa McPhate (Jason), Robert Walrath (Meriah), Gary Walrath, Anneliese Walrath, and Marissa Walrath. His legacy continues through his adored grandchild, Elora Walrath. AJ was a brother to Nancy Runyans and Richard Walrath. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kelley, and his parents, Arthur and Margaret Walrath.

He was an avid traveler, exploring the world and embracing new cultures, always returning with stories that captivated his listeners. A connoisseur of chocolate, he never missed an opportunity to indulge in his favorite treat, often sharing it with those around him.
