He was a son to Ruth Hammock and David Smith, a brother to Veronica Martin, Tyrone Hammock, and Sonya Smith, and a cherished member of an expansive family that included his Aunt Priscilla Wootan, Uncle Reverend Neil McAuthur and wife Shirley, Uncle Johnny Poole and Aunt Barbara Ann Poole. His life was further enriched by the companionship of his very good friend Twanna Milton, sister-in-law Claudette Smith and family, good friends Gary and Amy, and his close childhood friend Reverend Marvin McMahon and family. Another guiding force in his life was Mother Mackie, whom he affectionately regarded as another momma. Dave was a beloved uncle to a host of nieces and nephews, and he held a special place in the hearts of numerous friends from Bradenton, Venice and Sarasota. He was preceded in death by his brother David Smith Jr., his grandparents Reverend Neil and Katie McAuthur, and his dear aunts Mattie and Mildred.

Dave's love for life was evident in all he did. He found joy in the simple act of riding his bicycle, feeling the breeze against his face and taking in the world around him. He was known for his strong work ethic, a trait admired by colleagues and loved ones alike.
