Leo Nelson Dumphy, 86, passed peacefully at the Brandley Hospice House in Summerfield, Florida on March 3, 2024. Leo, born on August 4, 1937, in Worcester, Massachusetts, was the son of Thomas and Ora Burpee Dumphy (both deceased) and waspreceded in death by his twelve brothers and sisters.  Leo also was preceded in death six months prior by his beloved wife of 68 years, Barbara Grace Dumphy. He is survived by his sons, Ralph Nelson Dumphy of Havelock, NC and Keith Alan Dumphy of Belleview, FL.

Leo's life was one marked by service and commitment. He proudly served his country as a Dental Tech Master Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy for over 22 years. Following his esteemed military career, Leo, although deaf at the time, enrolled in college and received an associate degree in accounting with which he continued to serve thru Civil Service Personnel as a Pay Records Administrator at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune for another 15 years of service to his country. From joining the Navy at the early age of 17 to duty stations on ship in Guam, solo tour at Iwakuni, Japan and family tour at Sasebo, Japan, he enjoyed the always changing new duty stations and making new friends of co-workers and neighbors many of which became lifelong friends. He was a true workaholic who loved his job which he always gave 110% which was acknowledged numerous times by Management in his receiving certificate awards and plaques for a job well done.

Leo was a man of many interests. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his sons and other relatives and friends. His love for bowling was a shared interest with his beloved wife, Barbara, with whom he spent many cherished moments at the lanes as well as practicing with his son Keith when they were together. An avid war history buff, Leo could often be found with his nose in a book, absorbing the stories and strategies of historical battles and leaders.

Leo's dedication to his community was evident in his longtime involvement with First Christian Church of Richlands, NC and the Ruritan Club.  He and his wife Barbara enjoyed giving back thru helping with fundraising for scholarships and community projects which demonstrated their commitment to being caring and unselfish in giving back and supporting others in need. Leo's commitment to these causes reflected his character as a man who always looked out for his neighbors, friends and family and sought to make a difference in this world even though he faced his own challenges later in life with going deaf and having Parkinsons.

Leo's presence was a beacon of strength and love for those who knew him. His absence will be deeply felt, but the memories he created will continue to bring comfort and smiles to his family and friends. Leo Nelson Dumphy lived a life of purpose and commitment and left this world better for his having been in it. His legacy will be remembered and cherished for generations to come.

As we bid farewell to Leo, we celebrate the enduring impact of his life. His story is one of perseverance, love, and unwavering dedication to the things that matter most. Leo's journey through life serves as an inspiration to all that knew and loved him.

A memorial service honoring his life will be scheduled at a later date with service at First Christian Church of Richlands, NC and burial at Montford Point National Cemetary in Jacksonville, NC.
