Mary Magdalene Sarvis Obituary
Mary Magdalene Sarvis was called into her place of eternal rest on September 3, 2024.Mary
was the second twin daughter born to the late Waterman Hicks and Leola Burroughs of
Georgetown County on July 2nd, 1949. Our mom's father, Waterman Hicks on his death bed,
placed her hands in our father's hands and asked our dad to take care of his baby girl. Dad said
he would, and Grandma Leola took them down to the justice of peace where they were married
in a simple ceremony. Soon after that they made their way to Overtown (Miami), Fl to take their
claim and never looked back. They became entrepreneurs and started a family. People from as
far as West Palm Beach would come for our parent Perlo Rice and Fried Fish. They sold fish for
over 30 yrs. in the streets of Miami.
On her spare time, she would go thrifting and baked plenty of pies and cakes. To past time
sewing was a hobby she enjoyed, her love for books placed her at local libraries weekly. She
became a regular member of the prayer line and would also volunteer at church functions and
attend bible study.
Mary M Sarvis retired from the School Board where she worked for over 20 years. Every day she
would sell peanuts in Downtown Miami in front of every store and even the courthouse with her
kids in tow. She was a prayer warrior who loved her family, God, and husband right up to the last
moment she took her last breath in this life. She was a woman of God, never complained, and
always prayed and dedicated her life to her family.
Mary is preceded in death by three loving brothers: Joseph Hicks, Eddie Hicks, and Lavon Hicks;
three adoring sisters Emma Lue Hicks, Coleta Carr, and Cleo Hicks Singletary, and one
stepdaughter, Barbara Yanes.
Mary leaves to cherish her loving husband, LeRue Sarvis, three loving children, LeRue Jr., Mary
Lee, and Marvin Sarvis and one stepson Oliver Parmley(Tonya); seven grandchildren: Chaunte,
Frankisha, Franklin, Alexis, Alex Jr., Ashley, and Allison; 10 great grandchildren. Seven devoted
